Surprisingly, BIEN Á TOI, are French. They play a familiar yet intriguing brand of post-metal/screamo. Except it isn’t really post-metal, actually, and it isn’t really screamo either. It is confusingly eclectic whilst maintaining all the hallmarks of a very good instru-metal band. Let me describe: The opening track, ‘Dystopie’ kicks straight into a Pelican style groove which, oddly, reminds me a little of Thrice, it calms down slightly leading into a n The Absence of Truth era ISIS sound, before recommencing with the Thrice/Pelican crunch. It then pretty much stops altogether, and we get some beeps (they’re not really beeps; I have a rather limited vocabulary when it comes to describing music). Some really quite beautiful beeps, actually; we get a moment of real calm. Then, some urgency, the percussion kicks in, I mean, really kicks in and it continues in this vein for the rest of track, building in urgency ever so slightly until we reach a quiet, yet lingering end. Next track, ‘Pour les autres’ kicks in immediately, still reminiscent of Pelican at their Sabbath-iest. But, wait, vocals! Screaming!
This is good. Really good actually, I’m not going to pretend that BIEN Á TOI are breaking new ground, I’m sure even the band themselves would admit that they are, but, I want to keep listening to this EP, bizarrely, I find it relaxing. The only reference I can really throw into the mix are Buried Inside, but whilst Buried Inside venture off into the realms of metalcore and mathcore, BIEN Á TOI stay right on course, their infectious post-rock/metal/whatever worming its way into my brain, each track merging seamlessly and memorably into the next. This is a rather assured piece of work, more instrumental than screamo, and perhaps a little bit short, but no doubt about it BIEN Á TOI have left us a teaser: if this is where it starts, I can’t wait to see where it ends.
