Everyone loved Mclusky, and rightly so, they were totally awesome. You can imagine though that Andy Falkous and Jack Egglestone have been trying to shake off the ex-Mclusky tag ever since the bands demise in 2005. It seems rather unusual that this, the first single from Future of the Left’s forthcoming third album ‘The Plot Against Common Sense’, sounds like, yeah you guessed it, Mclusky. ‘Sheena is a T-Shirt Salesman’ bounces along with an infectious enthusiasm – something not entirely present in FOTL’s back catalogue, in fact something which it seemed FOTL tried to avoid. Instead this track sits more comfortably on Mclusky’s final album ‘The Difference Between Me And You Is That I’m Not On Fire’.
I’ve mentioned Mclusky enough, this track is, in its own right, still absolutely brilliant. It explodes out of the starting blocks and from that moment it is 120 seconds of relentless edgy punk fuelled noise. Barked vocals and captivating choruses are what Falkous does best, and this is no different. ‘Artistic radio, artistic license”; this will be stuck in your head for hours. This is organised chaos, pure punk rock. It’s positively dazzling! Lyrically this is classic Falkous, tongue-in-cheek satire and wry observations abound: “Sheena is a clever girl, she paid for our equipment with her tits”; “dumb is the new black”. The track title is an obvious reference to the famous Ramones track ‘Sheena is a Punk Rocker, and the video also makes reference to the band whilst simultaneously suggesting the meaning behind the lyrical content. It isn’t a dig at The Ramones, more a dig at the high street stores who sell T-Shirts with The Ramones logo on. You know what they’re getting at; I’m not going to insult your intelligence by spelling it out.
This is a bright new start for a new look Future of the Left, a band who had, arguably, lost a little bit of their energy seem reinvigorated and up for the fight. This could be the start of something even better in a so far remarkably faultless career.
‘Sheena is a T-Shirt Salesman’ is released on March 12th.
